In reality, 97% of the artists signed to major labels do not recoup expenses or see any royalties. This short-term methodology is a result of major labels becoming owned by publicly held corporations that have the mandate to deliver huge profits quarterly, an environment where music has simply become "product," and artists are no longer allowed time to develop naturally. The battle against free downloads and CD burning are cover-ups for an industry that is in trouble over its content and methodology. The majors are in economic retreat as they have turned off both the artist and the consumer with a short-term methodology created by corporate greed.
